Tongariro Alpine Crossing - is a mountain environment and we recommend you follow the outdoor safety code at all times.

You can experience winter conditions all year round so be prepared.  May to October we recommend that you travel with a guide in the high country or when walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.  If in doubt contact the local DOC visitor centre or ring a local guiding company.

During winter conditions please ensure you have the correct winter clothing and equipment.  If you are not experienced please seek advise from a professional.

Always follow the Outdoor Safety Code 5 simple rules

  1. PLAN YOUR TRIP - Seek local knowledge and plan the rout you will take and the amount of time you can reasonable expect to take.
  2. TELL SOMEONE - Tell someone your plans and leave a date and time for when to raise the alarm if you have not returned.
  3. BE AWARE OF THE WEATHER - New Zealand's weather and particularly in the Tongariro National Park can be highly unpredictable.  Check the forecast and expect weather changes.
  4. KNOW YOUR LIMITS - Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience.
  5. TAKE SUFFICIENT SUPPLIES - Make sure you have enough food, equipment, clothing and emergency rations for the worst case scenario.  Take an appropriate means of communication

Remember when doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing always:

  • Have plenty of food and water
  • Wet weather gear
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Warm clothes
